Department of For-Hire Vehicles

Due to the Snow Emergency declared by Mayor Bowser, the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) has established a Snow Emergency Fare beginning at 12 am Monday, January 6. The Snow Emergency Fare adds a flat $15 per trip to the metered taxi fare for trips originating in the District.
DFHV Client Services (physical office), TransportDC, and all other transportation programs are also suspended today, January 6, 2025. Passengers may contact taxi companies directly to request WAV or dialysis trips. Please continue to monitor the website for updates.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Pilot

In June 2024, DFHV launched the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) Pilot program to improve accessibility and convenience for passengers and to help increase the supply of drivers and WAVs in the District. The pilot will end on December 31.

EMPOWER is not registered with DFHV and is not authorized to operate as a ride share provider in the District. Therefore, driving for EMPOWER will subject drivers to DFHV enforcement including vehicle impoundment. Also, DFHV discourages the public from accepting rides on the EMPOWER APP as there could be seriously negative consequences for the passengers.

DC School Connect provides transportation to a select number of District Public and Charter Schools in Safe Passage Zones in Wards 7 and 8. Please contact your school for more information on enrolling in the program.

Obtain a Special Permit for Inauguration

DFHV will grant Special Permits to for-hire vehicle operators to allow transporting of passengers during authorized events held in the District of Columbia.

Driver Resources
