Taxicab Fares

Taxicab Fares 

If you hail a taxi on the street or from a taxi line at a hotel, train station, etc., you will pay the rates below. Note that Approved taxi-booking apps set their own fares. 

 

District of Columbia taxi rates effective at midnight on August 2, 2024  

Fares

  • First 1/8 mile: $4.00  

  • Passenger Surcharge:  $0.50 

  • Each additional mile: $2.56 

  • Shared Ride Rate: $1.20 per mile (see AI 2018-05

  • Wait Time Rate: $25 per hour 

  • Wait time is calculated in 60-second increments (approximately $0.42 per minute) and is charged while the taxicab is stopped or slowed to less than ten (10) miles per hour for longer than 60 seconds.  

  • If the vehicle is responding to a dispatch, wait time begins five (5) minutes after the requested pickup time at the dispatch location. No wait time is charged for early arrival. 

  • Wait time is charged for delays or stopovers at the direction of the passenger.  

 

Extras

  • Telephone Dispatch: $2.00 

  • Additional passenger regardless of the number of additional passengers: $1.00 

  • Declared Snow Emergency Fee: $15.00 

  • Group or Shared Riding: as each passenger arrives at his or her destination fare due shall be paid by the passenger(s) leaving the cab. 

  • Airport surcharge or toll: If any, passenger(s) will pay the same amount that the driver paid. 

  • Non-passenger Delivery Service: same rate as a single passenger unless the vehicle is hired by the hour. 

  • Luggage or animal fee: None 

 

Hourly Contract Rate

  • First Hour: $35.00 

  • Each additional 15 min: $8.75

Go to Digital Dispatch Services and download any app providing digital dispatch service for a District taxicab to get an estimate for the cost of your ride. Enter your pick-up and destination location to see the amount the ride is estimated to cost. 

 

For rides booked via apps: App rates are set by the companies. The app shall disclose fare calculations, applicable rates, and either an estimated or actual fare before the customer books the ride.
