Mission
The mission of the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is to protect public interest by regulating the vehicle-for-hire industry to allow the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia to have safe, affordable, and accessible transportation options.
Summary of Service
The Department of For-Hire Vehicles provides licensing, adjudication, enforcement, and Lost and Found service for drivers, taxicab companies/associations, and limousine operators, as well as DC residents and visitors who use public and private vehicle-for-hire in District of Columbia.
New Name/Expanded Responsibilities
The newly reorganized Department of For-Hire Vehicles is now aligned with the mission to regulate the vehicle-for-hire industry to allow the citizens and visitors of the District of Columbia to have safe, affordable and accessible transportation. Agency duties include regulating taxis, limousines, private vehicle operators, digital dispatch services, Payment Service Providers; and managing the relationships with equipment manufacturers and insurance companies. The office is restructured as follows: Office of the Director; Compliance & Enforcement; Regulatory Policy & Planning; Client Services; and Hearings & Conflict Resolution. The For-Hire Vehicle Advisory Council will advise the agency on the industry.

Panels
The Director of the agency has the authority to establish panels to review specific issues and concerns of the industry. A panel will engage in appropriate research to provide a report to the agency for consideration and action as warranted.
