The DC Taxicab Commission (DCTC) expresses condolences to the family of taxicab driver Solomon Okoroh. The driver who worked for Classic Cab was killed while on duty during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) engaged in a chase with several gunshots exchanged before apprehending two individuals.

Mr. Okoroh has driven for Classic Cab for 15 years. He was a father of five who had immigrated from Nigeria. Evelyn Ruiz, the owner of Classic Cab told The Washington Post that he drove a cab to make money and would pick up every fare.

“This is a horrible tragedy and our deepest sympathies are with the family,” DCTC Chairman Ron M. Linton said. “The patrol officers from the Metropolitan Police Depart should be commended for their courageous efforts to capture the alleged killer.”

The incident occurred in the Adams Morgan neighborhood during a power outage. The patrol officers responded to the screeching taxi that crashed into a parking meter and street sign. The suspects were pursued on foot and exchanged gun shots with the officers. The suspects entered a nearby basement apartment and were taken into custody in the home.

There is discussion of establishing a fund to assist the family and information about how donations can be made will be provided after the specifics are confirmed. Details regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
