The District of Columbia Taxicab Commission is pleased to announce the soft rollout of the Wheelchair Accessible Taxicab Vehicles January 11, 2010.

The Wheelchair Accessible Taxicab Pilot Project was made possible by legislation introduced by Councilmember Jim Graham, (Ward 1, D) and approved by the DC Council, “The Wheelchair Accessible Taxicab Promotion Fund Act of 2007" in which $200,000 was set aside to encourage the purchase, operation and use of Wheelchair Accessible Taxicabs within the District of Columbia.

The funds provided a local match for the purposes of obtaining federal funding. The recipients of the District of Columbia grant funds and funding provided by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) were Liberty Transportation Management, LLC and Yellow Paratransit, LLC. Each company received $100,000 and 10 Toyota Siennas provided for the program.
