The DC Taxicab Commission is alerting DC taxicab drivers that a member of the DC Council has submitted a resolution blocking the Office of Contracting and Procurement’s proposed amendment to the Commission’s contract with VeriFone that would enable the District to cover the cost of installation of the Taxi Smart Meter System (TSMS) on behalf of drivers.

The Mayor has instructed the DC Taxicab Commission to work to identify an alternate mechanism that will allow the District to pay the driver’s installation cost.  However, drivers should be aware that if such a mechanism is not identified by this Wednesday, August 22, unfortunately drivers will be required to bear the cost of installation.  We remain hopeful that the DC Council Member blocking the District’s ability to cover the installation cost will withdraw his opposition.

This first installation of TSMS will begin this Wednesday, August 22.
