DMV to Register Taxicabs to District Residents or DC-based Businesses

Wednesday, April 12, 2006
Attention Taxicab/Limo Drivers

In accordance with DCMR Title 18 Chapter 4 Section 412.1(m), the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) only registers vehicles to citizens who are District residents or District of Columbia-based businesses.

Effective March 1, 2006, DC DMV will conform to the law by only registering taxi/limo vehicles to citizens who are District residents or District of Columbia-based businesses.

DC DMV will continue to renew taxi/limo vehicles (i.e., owner already has an existing DC title), regardless of residency, until further notice. Approval from the DC Taxicab Office will not be required for these renewals.

DC DMV will not transfer an existing taxi/limo vehicle registration to a new vehicle unless the new vehicle already has an existing DC title in the owner's name. Effective April 12, 2006, DC DMV will not issue DCTC licenses to vehicles that are registered out-of-state.

DC DMV will only issue inter-jurisdictional DCTC licenses to limos that are registered out-of-state once approval (including any applicable verification of insurance and Title 31 inspection) is received from the DC Taxicab Office.
