Weekend Enforcement Stepped Up to Increase Public Safety

MEDIA CONTACT: Neville Waters 202.645.6020; [email protected]

The DC Taxicab Commission (DCTC) has assigned Public Vehicle Enforcement Inspectors (PVEI) to extended hours during this weekend of October 31-November 1. Numerous Halloween celebrations on Friday and the time change on Saturday to adjust the clock back one hour have necessitated the extra service to enhance public safety during what likely will be an active weekend.

The PVEIs will target rogue operators that solicit illegal street hails and drivers without proper insurance documentation. The diligent enforcement effort is intended to ensure public safety and consumer protection during a particularly busy late night weekend.

Riders need to be aware that legal District taxicabs have a standardized dome light with the Public Vehicle Identification Number displayed; a meter that is capable of accepting credit cards and a District-issued H-tag.  The public should not accept rides from drivers seeking to provide transportation unless their vehicle meets the aforementioned criteria. Riders may summon vehicles electronically; however drivers must have an electronic manifest and proof of insurance coverage.

Passenger complaints can be submitted to DCTC online at http://dctaxi.dc.gov/service/complaints.
