DC Taxicab Commission Announces Dome Light Manufacturers

Friday, May 31, 2013
Installations begin June 1

Contact: Neville Waters (202) 645-6020

The DC Taxicab Commission (DCTC) today announces the two certified manufacturers of the new standardized DC taxicab dome light: Bass & Treble and Pro-Lite, Inc. DC taxi owners will be able to make their own arrangements and choose from among the twelve certified Taximeter Installation Companies to order and install the dome light.  Dome light installations can begin June 1, 2013. All DC taxis are required to be outfitted with the new standardized dome light by August 31, 2013.

The new standardized dome light is major step in the modernization plans for the DC taxi industry. This dome light will make DC taxis more recognizable and identifiable as it will be exclusive to the District because the city has applied to hold the patent. Thus, only legally licensed DC taxis will display it.

The dome light will indicate in LED lights the taxicab’s unique number called Public Vehicle Identification Number (PVIN) as well as when a taxi is available for hire; on-call; or, off-duty. The dome light message will be blank and only show the PVIN when a passenger is being transported.

A significant benefit of the new standardized dome light will be an expected reduction in Refusal to Haul violations. Passengers will only need to report to the Commission the PVIN if a taxi does not stop while displaying taxi for hire on the dome light.

Bass & Treble can be contacted at (202) 484-2600 or by email at [email protected]. Contact information for Pro-Lite, Inc is (714) 668-9988 or [email protected]. The complete list of Taximeter Installation Companies is available on the DCTC website.
