Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Pilot

In June 2024, the Department of For-Hire Vehicles launched the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) Pilot program to improve accessibility and convenience for passengers and to help increase the supply of drivers and WAVs in the District. The pilot will end on December 31.

How do I book a trip using the new hotline?

  • Customers must call the (202) 977-4WAV number.
  • The system will greet the customer and ask for the zip code or Quadrant they’re in, the customer can type or say their location when prompted.
  • After a few seconds, the telephone system will inform the customer of the taxi company with the closest WAV and ask if they would like to be connected. The system will also ask the customer if they prefer to be connected to a different company.
  • The telephone system will then transfer the customer to the WAV provider.
  • If the provider is unable to fulfill the request within 15 minutes they will transfer the customer to a different provider.
  • Trips using the WAV Hotline will be charged at taxi meter rates.
  • Fares can be paid using cash or credit card.

Through this pilot program, we are providing incentives to wheelchair-accessible vehicle drivers to be available at all hours of the day. To make it easier to find a WAV, we have established a dedicated hotline. This system will use your location to provide you with information on the closest available WAV. You will then have the option to connect directly with the taxi company to arrange for a pickup. These vehicles are equipped with the necessary features to ensure a comfortable and seamless journey.
